Dublin Port is owned and managed by Dublin Port Company (DPC). DPC is a self-financing private company owned by the State. DPC is an infrastructure provider. Shipping, terminal and cargo handling operations at the port are carried out by private sector companies operating in competitive markets. DPC is responsible for the provision and maintenance of the infrastructure needed by these companies to meet Ireland’s trading needs – now and in the future.
Dublin Port is the country’s largest and business port. The port is being developed in accordance with Masterplan 2040. This strategic framework gives certain and clarity about the development of Dublin Port, and involves complex construction projects to provide essential port capacity for future growth.
Central to Masterplan 2040 is proper planning and sustainable development. The requirement to understand, measure, report and mitigate environmental impacts (whether due to operations or construction) is increasing and Dublin Port needs to be at the forefront in understanding its environment in all respects.
Dublin Port is located in the environmentally sensitive and protected area of Dublin Bay and is surrounded on the land side by densely populated urban and suburban communities. The Port’s relationship with its natural and built environments is key. Masterplan 2040 therefore also has a core objective to develop and implement a Natural Capital Policy that will underpin the sustainability of the Port’s operations and development.
