About the role:

We are seeking a graduate candidate who has some experience to grow in one or more of the following fields:

• Energy management
• Energy efficiency 
• Renewable energy
• Decentralised energy
• Energy engineering
• Electric vehicles 

The scope of the role will include:

• Supporting the Carbon Trust’s Cities & Regions team to provide consultancy advice on carbon reduction projects, from identifying new decarbonisation opportunities and assessing their feasibility and developing the business case, through to securing client commitment to delivery and implementation
• Supporting the Project Manager in the delivery of consultancy activities for large-scale carbon reduction projects
• Taking a lead role and working independently in the delivery of consultancy activities for smaller-scale carbon reduction projects, and elements of large-scale projects
• Supporting carbon footprinting and net zero strategy and action planning for public bodies
• Supporting wider Carbon Trust project work in the UK and internationally

Main duties and responsibilities:

The Junior Energy Consultant (analyst) will work collaboratively within the Carbon Trust’s Cities & Region’s Team on wide-ranging consultancy activities; including technical calculations, client management, and project management aspects. This will involve supporting the team with project delivery work and working independently where appropriate.

This role will predominantly be engaging with public sector bodies such as local government, healthcare, and the education sector (among others) to undertake work as laid out in the following:

The Junior Energy Consultant will support Project Managers to:

• Develop, manage and maintain excellent client relationships
• Establish client drivers and needs in relation to the low carbon agenda to inform and influence strategic decarbonisation activities
• Conduct technical and economic feasibility assessments of energy efficiency / renewable / decentralised energy projects to establish cost and carbon saving potential (for land based renewable energy, building mounted renewable energy, lighting, building fabric, building services etc.)
• Develop the business case for strategic energy projects and establish delivery route
• Support procurement of decarbonisation projects including establishing procurement channels, developing specifications / invitation to tender (ITT) documentation etc.
• Support the management and reporting for large government programmes
• Support the delivery of carbon footprinting and net zero strategy and action planning projects for public bodies
• Contribute to business development and institution-building efforts where required (e.g. knowledge development, marketing and sales)

The Junior Energy Consultant will be the lead in the delivery of:

• On-site and desk-based energy consumption data collection
• Data modelling, energy consumption analysis, carbon footprinting and report writing
• Desk-based research
• Preliminary feasibility calculations for energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities – including establishing carbon impact, and financial benefits
• Drafting recommendation reports to communicate results and establish next steps for implementation of decarbonisation projects

Key skills we are looking for:

• Organised and efficient with good project management and project delivery skills
• Demonstrated experience across some of the following areas: energy management, energy efficiency, renewable energy, district heating, housing retrofit, energy performance contracts, engineering project management
• Excellent client management skills, applying a high standard of interpersonal skills to build client relationships and influence stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral), with the ability to present technical information in a clear and concise format, suitable for non-specialists
• Excellent problem solving skills
• Highly numerate with good Excel skills
• Ability to lead client meetings and workshop sessions
• Ability to work effectively in a complex team environment and to take initiative and deliver projects independently when required

Key Performance Indicators:

• Contribution to organisational and programme performance indicators e.g. number/type/scale of decarbonisation projects identified and implemented
• Impact in relation to the Carbon Trust’s mission to accelerate the move to a sustainable, low carbon economy
• Individual time utilisation targets, demonstrating high proportion of overall time spent undertaking efficient project work
• Customer satisfaction levels
• Contribution to achieving team revenue targets and business development activity
• Familiarity and favourability of the Carbon Trust in its target customer markets

Qualifications and experience: 

• Qualified in a relevant energy, engineering and/or science discipline
• Ability to manipulate models and undertake calculations using MS Excel
• Ability to write technical reports in plain English using MS Word and PowerPoint
• Work experience in the field of energy (consultancy / within an organisation)
• Understanding of the barriers and drivers affecting the public and private sector bodies in tacking climate change
• Insight into carbon and energy policy in the UK and internationally
• Full driving license

Salary & Benefits: 

We offer a competitive salary and a performance based bonus. Our hours are 37.5 per week with 28 days paid holiday plus bank holidays and a generous pension scheme.
