Make tomorrow: build your future with a local team that’s part of a national mission

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Asset Performance teams commission work to enhance, maintain and repair some 78,000 flood and coastal risk assets across England. By contributing to the management of these investments, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

From earth embankments and floodwalls to pumping stations and flood storage reservoirs, our assets need continuous maintenance and improvement. By managing data about the siting and condition of these assets, you'll help to plan and deliver projects within your geographic patch. You’ll be using a wide range of IT systems and will make decisions based on data and evidence. There may be opportunities for site visits to help you understand the assets and gather data. You’ll use your excellent communication skills to respond to customer enquiries and work with a range of internal colleagues and external organisations. Incident management is a crucial part of the role and you’ll participate in an out-of-hours roster.

The person

This is an ideal development role for someone who has excellent organisational and data management skills. We’ll build on your existing experience by giving you all the training and support you need. You could be a recent graduate in science or engineering, or have hands-on experience in the environmental or water sector. Knowledge of flood risk management, asset management or GIS systems would be helpful, but it’s your strong communication skills and problem-solving abilities that will really set you apart.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
