Flood & Coastal Risk Management
Flood Risk Officer G4
Grade 4: £28,785
Various locations

Change tomorrow: deliver our Capital programme today

The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Our Partnership and Strategic Overview (PSO) teams support the whole lifecycle of our flood and coastal risk management assets, working with communities, professional partners and other organisations to protect us all from flood risk. Whether you’re analysing data to inform plans or developing strategic approaches to protect people and property, your skills are vital for our future.

The role

Delivering the Capital programme is our key objective, and you’ll play a key part in its success through business representation, funding negotiations, planning and permit advice, strategic planning and more. Much of our team’s activities involve analysis of GIS, models and datasets.

This is an outward-facing role and you’ll be working with Risk Management Authorities and customers on flood risk matters. You’ll also play a role in incident response, supporting our incident management teams as and when required.

The person

You don’t need specific qualifications or experience for this role, but knowledge of the following will be helpful:

• Project development
• Rivers and coast engineering
• Planning and permitting activities
• Influencing and negotiation
• Evidence based modelling
• GIS and data management

As you’ll be working with internal and external partners, as well as members of the public, it’s vital you have excellent communication and customer service skills.

Enthusiasm, ambition and organisation will help you achieve set targets and deadlines, and your initiative will keep you working alone as well as within your team. A driving licence, while not essential, is desirable.
The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
