Role Title: Catchment Science and Nutrient Neutrality Consultant

Salary: 25,000 - 45,0000

Location: Harwell / London / Manchester / Bristol / Sheffield / flexible

Who we are:

Ricardo Energy & Environment is a leading sustainability consultancy combining energy, climate change, environmental and chemical risk expertise with strong IT and economics capability. Operating across the world, we work in partnership with our customers to help transform the way they work, empowering business leaders with award winning consultancy advice. With unrivalled sector insight and a reputation for producing innovative solutions, we offer a stimulating and rewarding environment in which to work.

The Role:

Our reputation in the water, agriculture and planning sectors has seen significant growth in our Water and Agricultural teams’ work to support clients in understanding the challenges and solutions to nutrient management across England and Wales. As such we have a strong technical understanding of how ecology, physical conditions, water quality, land use and infrastructure interface and lead to exceedances of environmental quality standards and as a result challenges for regulation, development and compliance across a range of sectors. We support councils, planners, and regulators, helping them to understand issues and recommend mitigation measures (from SuDS to catchment-based solutions) for managing nutrient neutrality and delivering sustainable water resource management. This varied work sees us working on problems from how to mitigate nitrate and phosphate resulting from infrastructure development to how land use change can reduce the need for water treatment. We are also currently in the process of developing practical tools for Natural England that will see a national rollout to help support nutrient neutral development.

Key accountabilities:

We are therefore seeking to appoint a catchment science specialist to support our nutrient management/neutrality and catchment management work. This specialist will have the skills to help with catchment conceptual modelling; have an understanding of the underlying Habitat Regulation Assessment (HRA) principles that underpin the Nutrient Neutrality issue and/or experience of using models such as Farmscoper and similar nutrient related tools.

* A successful candidate is also likely to understand different nutrient mitigation opportunities and the barriers to implementation in the agricultural and development sectors.
* Candidates will be expected to show how actions to improve environmental management can support regulatory environmental compliance related to water and aquatic habitat and species regulations.
* We are keen to offer the post to someone who already has technical capability but is also eager to learn more and support very active business development opportunities related to Nutrient Neutrality.

Key competencies and experience:

You will need to demonstrate that you have:

* An environmentally based subject degree (ideally with a postgraduate qualification) that includes catchment science and associated water quality and land management expertise.
* A strong technical understanding of the key environmental linkages (especially hydrology, land use and soil conditions) that lead to effective environmental management within the context of catchment management and nutrient neutrality issues.
* An understanding of relevant UK Water and Agricultural Policy and legislation, including the Habitats Regulations and Water Framework Directive.
* A strong understanding of nutrient pathways from source to sea, with an ability to demonstrate how this knowledge can be used to recommended mitigation measures that will support regulatory requirements.
* Working knowledge of hydrology and the linkages between land use, soils, hydrology and water quality.
* Consultancy experience in this area (with experience of the links between the agriculture and water sectors).
* Excellent communication skills both with colleagues and clients.
* Strong analytical skills with an ability to assess a range of complex datasets.
* Excellent report writing skills.
* Ability to manage you own portfolio of work in a busy environment and work to tight deadlines.
* A clean full driving licence.

Ideally you should also be able to demonstrate:

* Understanding and/or use of Farmscoper and/or similar tools.
* Ability to contribute to technical submissions that support HRAs.
* An ambition to develop new business.
* A desire to manage client relationships.
* An aptitude for small- to medium-sized project management.
