Principal Consultant: Business Development - Catchment Science and Nutrient Neutrality

The Role:

Our reputation in the water, agriculture and planning sectors has seen significant growth in our Water and Agricultural teams work to support clients in understanding the challenges and solutions to nutrient management across England and Wales. As such we have a strong technical understanding of how ecology, physical conditions, water quality, land use and infrastructure interface and lead to exceedances of environmental quality standards and as a result challenges for regulation, development and compliance across a range of sectors. We support councils, planners, and regulators, helping them to understand issues and recommend mitigation measures (from SuDS to catchment-based solutions) for managing nutrient neutrality and delivering sustainable water resource management. This varied work sees us working on problems from how to mitigation nitrate and phosphate resulting from infrastructure development to how land use change can reduce the need for water treatment. We are also currently in the process of developing practical tools for Natural England that will see a national rollout to help support nutrient neutral development.

We are keen to build on our success and expand this business area and to encompass other areas that link to water quality and other neutrality issues at a catchment scale. We recognise that with current Environmental Bill and Government plan 25 Year environment there are significant opportunities that lend itself to the development within our water and agricultural teams. We are therefore seeking to appoint a principal consultant that not only has technical specialism in this area but the insight and ambition to growth our strengths in the sectors of nutrient management/neutrality and wider catchment management work (including for example drinking water issues).

What a success candidate will look like:

* You will need to have the drive and ambition to take this area of business forward together and support a growing team.
* You will be expected to quickly develop a business strategy identifying target client and opportunities, develop a plan of action with associated budgets in conjunction with your tea leader and identify future needs within the business.
* You will need to have the confidence to work across different sectors of the Ricardo business including working with the senior management team and have a strong track record of stakeholder engagement.
* You need to be able to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate the ability for innovative thinking.

Key competencies and experience:

You will need to demonstrate that you have:

Business and consultancy skills

* Business acumen to grow this business area.
* Consultancy experience in this area (with experience of the links between the agriculture and water sectors) with circa 10 years’ experience.
* Excellent communication skills both with colleagues and clients.
* Development of outreach activities to demonstrate Ricardo’s abilities
* Team leadership and mentoring experience
* Project management skills
* Ability to manage a portfolio of work in a busy environment and work to tight deadlines.
* Innovative thinking for problem solving and to drive efficiencies

Technical skills

* An environmentally based subject degree (ideally with a postgraduate qualification) that includes catchment science and associated water quality and land management expertise.
* A strong technical understanding of the key environmental linkages (especially hydrology, land use and soil conditions) that lead to effective environmental management within the context of catchment management and nutrient neutrality issues.
* An understanding of relevant UK Water and Agricultural Policy and legislation, including the Habitats Regulations and Water Framework Directive.
* Working knowledge of hydrology and the linkages between land use, soils, hydrology and water quality.
* Strong analytical skills with an ability to assess a range of complex datasets.
* Innovative thinking to deliver programmes of work
* Working knowledge of associated models and remote imagery to support this area of work’s development including
* Excellent report writing skills with a strong attention to detail.
