Senior Terrestrial Ecologist

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Terrestrial Ecologist to join a global Environmental consultancy and to work within a team of highly experienced terrestrial and aquatic scientists. Based in Edinburgh, Oxford or Cambridge (with the option for remote work also). 

The role will involve using cross-cutting expertise in terrestrial ecology, fisheries science, hydrology, hydro/geomorphology and water quality to deliver a range of projects for the UK environment and conservation providers and providing high quality work unified by the theme of protecting the environment

The purpose of the role is to undertake terrestrial ecology site work and support in the preparation, writing and delivery of tenders and reports via data processing, analysis and interpretation.


About you

You will hold an ecology related degree, as well as 3-4 years experience within a similar role. You must be well versed on working within the UK regulatory framework and have a working knowledge of UK and European wildlife legislation and policy. Flexibility is key to this role as you will need to undertake site visits across the UK; as such, the ability to work autonomously is essential. 

You will also need solid experience within designing protected species surveys and compiling ecology reports (PEAs, ERAs and EcIAs). Additionally, you will have working knowledge of botanic/habitat survey and classification and  will preferably hold at least one protected species licence, as well as CIEEM membership. 


Skills and Experience  - Essential

  • 3-4 years experience within a similar role
  • Degree educated in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrable knowledge of UK and European legislation and frameworks
  • Demonstrable experience in designing and carrying out protected species surveys
  • Experience of compiling EPS mitigation licence applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Phase 1 habitat survey experience, including good botanical identification skills
  • Knowledge of BNG process
  • Professional accreditation, or working towards this (desirable)
  • Msc or PHD educated (desirable)
  • Experience in using GIS software (desirable)
