Mid-level Geotechnical Engineer

Job Description

Our client is currently looking for a Mid-Level Geotechnical Engineer with 7-10 years’ experience to act as a project manager to support their growing geotechnical consulting practice in Bedford. The ideal candidate for this position is a motivated geotechnical engineering consulting professional with the desire to foster technical excellence and provide efficient project management while maintaining strong internal and external client relationships. This candidate will be an integral part of our growth strategy and must be willing to perform work both in the office as well as in the field.

As a Mid-Level Geotechnical Engineer, you will work with the staff of geotechnical, environmental and technician professionals dedicated to providing integrated services on a wide variety of projects, including site development and dam related projects. An understanding of the interaction between the phases of multi-disciplinary projects is desirable. You will be involved with the continued development and mentoring of junior staff and be responsible for scheduling, delegating, and overseeing the work of project team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing projects, delegating to office and field staff, and executing day to day activities of projects
  • Conducting site visits and field investigations when necessary
  • Preparing proposals and reviewing/writing geotechnical engineering reports, dam investigation and repair reports and construction-phase testing and inspection reports with Principal Engineer guidance and review
  • Managing project performance and project contractual and financial issues (including terms of agreement, changes in scope, scheduling, and billing process)
  • Managing, mentoring, and coordinating with SLR staff of project-level scientists, engineers, and consultants; and coordinating with them on projects
  • Conducting/reviewing technical analyses/calculations
  • Participating in meetings and agency consultation
  • Ensuring work is carried out in a safe manner and in accordance with company safety rules and applicable regulatory, industry, and other pertinent standards. This includes, but is not limited to, development of health and safety plans, coordinating and participating in regular safety meetings and training, work site inspections, using required personal protective equipment, and responding to unsafe work hazards
  • Conducting internal and client communications
  • Providing business development support

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering (Master’s Degree is a plus)
  • PE is strongly preferred, but on track to become appropriately licensed is required
  • History of providing geotechnical engineering consulting services for new development, forensic investigations, dam assessment and rehabilitation, and construction-phase testing and inspection
  • Understands geotechnical engineering foundation analysis and design procedures, ground improvement methods, assessment of dam integrity and development of repair documents, construction-phase testing and inspection methods and procedures
  • Balances field and office assignments; strong organizational skills
  • Prepares technical deliverables, data analysis, and drawing preparation for geotechnical engineering reports and dam engineering plans and specifications
  • Experience preparing reports that demonstrate technical knowledge and the ability to review the reports of others
  • Manages task assignments and helps mentor/train other staff as required
  • Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions and fosters a positive working relationship with the client
  • Systematically and pro-actively examines the various components of an issue to understand key elements and relationships and thinks strategically, considering a broad range of internal and external factors when solving problems and seeking input before making decisions
  • Completes tasks with minimal supervision and direction – self-starter
  • Demonstrates professional judgment, consistency, strong attention to detail, and background of high-quality work products
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong interest in safety
  • Possess or have completed 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER and 8-hour refresher training
  • Experience with Deltek or similar project management system is a plus
