Chartered Geotechnical Engineer

Job Description

As part of an integrated ground engineering team, you will guide and manage the geotechnical design input to multidisciplinary infrastructure schemes across a range of sectors including light and heavy rail, highways and water and will include work from feasibility stage through to investigation to detailed design. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams using effective communication to deliver design work. As well as leading small regional projects, you will also oversee 2D and/or 3D modelling for the wider geotechnical team. As part of your role you will guide a team of early career professionals to complete geotechnical design for HS2. Additionally, you will mentor and take part in the training of early career professionals provide support where required. You will also be provided with support by the Geotechnical Technical Director in order to continue your own professional development.

Typical types of geotechnical structures that you will lead the design of include:

  • Underground structures – Embedded retaining walls
  • Foundations (deep and shallow) for bridges and viaducts
  • Earthworks and ground improvement (rigid inclusions, pile load transfer platforms, approach embankment)
  • Deep rock and soil cuttings.

Candidate Specification

As a Geotechnical Engineer or Civil Engineer, you have experience in the geotechnical design of foundations and/or retaining walls as well as a fundamental understanding of soil interaction. You have also performed various 2D/3D modelling duties on multidisciplinary projects using using software such as Plaxis or similar. Additionally, as a collaborator by nature you’ve taken on design lead responsibilities and are comfortable liaising with colleagues as well as clients to provide updates and plan workload.
You will also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Degree educated in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Chartered or en-route to chartership with a relevant professional institution
  • Planning and organisation skills
  • Ability to guide and lead when required.

Although not essential, it would be beneficial if you have worked in a design and build environment as well as have experience in BIM model delivery or digital design. It would also be desirable if you have lead teams before and used modelling software Plaxis.

Job Profile

This role will provide the opportunity to guide geotechnical design on varied, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects across a range of sectors. Initially the role will involve concept and detailed design of High Speed 2 rail (a flagship project for the midlands) with a wider remit in geotechnical input to multidisciplinary projects across highways, buildings, rail, and water industry sectors.
