Our Energy and Environment business unit combines energy, climate change, environmental and chemical risk expertise with strong IT and economics capability.

We are currently looking for a Senior Environmental Chemist/Ecotoxicologist to join our National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC) team.

Key responsibilities

* Undertaking a range of client work, bringing their own specialisms, and contributing to delivery and sales across existing product areas.
* Providing extensive technical knowledge across the following: ecotoxicology, environmental fate, physical-chemical properties, exposure assessment, multimedia fate modelling, QSARs, statistics, data analysis, chemical analysis, risk assessment, scientific writing.
* Working with marketing and sales staff to ensure effective promotion of NCEC’s capabilities at events, as well as through webinars, technical papers and thought pieces.
* Keeping up to date with market trends and developments and helping us to develop new consultancy offerings to support business growth.
* Overseeing the work of junior staff supporting, as well as managing one’s own workload, in relation to technical projects and client work (ensuring the quality, accuracy and timeliness of deliverables).
* Supporting the personal development of members of the team in technical areas.

Key competencies and experience

* We are interested to talk to prospective applicants who can evidence some or all of the following criteria:
* A strong background in the environmental assessment of chemicals in a regulatory context; placing, reviewing and interpreting ecotoxicology and environmental fate tests, use of alternative methods (QSARs, read across, in vitro), exposure assessment and risk characterisation.
* Expertise in niche technical areas would be of interest, such as polymers, persistence, biodegradability, bioaccumulation, endocrine disruptors, metals.
* Educated to master’s degree level or higher in environmental toxicology, chemistry, biology or a related discipline with a minimum of five years’ post-graduate experience.
* A track record of scientific excellence, including publishing and presenting research, either independently or in collaboration with other partners or institutes.
* Hands-on experience working to address the requirements of European chemical regulations e.g., REACH, CLP, BPR, pharmaceuticals, PPP. Demonstrable experience of other (global) regulatory frameworks an advantage.
* An independent self-starter able to manage one’s own workload but also work collaboratively and effectively within a team.
* Ability to manage and influence people effectively and oversee the work of others.
* An excellent communicator, used to presenting your ideas and project outputs to customers and ideally at regulatory conferences, at events or through webinars, blogs etc.
* Bringing your own network of contacts from customers and stakeholder organisations.
