Due to an increased demand for our flood risk management, river and coastal engineering and drainage expertise AECOM is seeking an experienced and versatile flood risk management engineer and/or hydraulic modeller. Your role will be a key one in our expanding Water team so we are looking for a driven and ambitious applicant with at least 7 years’ experience in engineering and modelling aspects of flood risk projects. 

You will be working on high profile, diverse flood risk management and development projects for a wide range of public and private sector clients across Wales and south west England including the Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales, Environment Agency, Local Authorities, water and transport infrastructure operators. Our modern office in the heart of Cardiff city centre has good transport links and accommodates teams from a range of disciplines who’ll you’ll work closely with.

As a leading supplier of flood risk management services in the UK, you will integrate with forward thinking and highly skilled individuals and have the responsibility of leading and shaping sustainable solutions for clients, communities and the environment.

The role will require you to:

• Undertake Flood Consequence/Risk Assessments and Flood Mitigation Design

• Perform as a technical lead for flood risk assessment projects bringing together modelling (1D-2D) and engineering aspects of the project. You will have a strong understanding of engineering constraints and opportunities associated with modelling solutions to flooding problems to ensure model outputs are realistic;

• Undertake technical work including:

o hydrological / hydraulic modelling;

o quality assurance of technical work;

o identification, design and appraisal of flood risk management options;

o river engineering design; and

o report writing

• Undertake project management;

• Take a proactive approach to managing client relationships, clarifying expectations, success criteria and outcome measures in order to meet their requirements and deliver successful projects;

• Nurture, stretch and develop graduate team members and junior colleagues;

• Support wider business lines and develop and strengthen internal AECOM cross-sector relationships;

• Assist with the strengthening and widening of our client base and the preparation of bids and proposals;

The role may also require you to assist and work on secondment placements.

Minimum Requirements

The role will require the candidate to possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills / knowledge of:

• SFCAs and FCAs in Wales or SFRAs and FRAs in England

• Strong technical understanding of 1D and 2D modelling (industry standard software including ISIS/Flood Modeller Pro, ESTRY and TUFLOW);

• Technical understanding of GIS packages such as MapInfo and QGIS;

• It would be beneficial for applicants to have experience of undertaking hydrological assessments using FEH based methodologies and other techniques;

• Knowledge and understanding of hydraulic behaviour and channel / flood risk management structures and how to replicate these in modelling software;

• Experience in quality assurance and reviewing hydrological / hydraulic models and recommending solutions for overcoming problems;

• Practical experience of developing solutions to flood risk problems - identification, appraisal and design of options

• Successful track record of working in the flood risk management sector and liaising with key stakeholders ;

• Commercial awareness and the ability to manage and deliver projects to time and budget;

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

• Chartered or close to achieving chartership with appropriate institution (i.e. ICE, CIWEM);

• A flexible and dynamic approach and mindset to respond to changing market requirements;

• Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in environmental/earth sciences or civil engineering;
