Job Ref:

AECOM is a premier, fully integrated professional and technical services firm positioned to design, build, finance and operate infrastructure assets around the world for public- and private-sector clients. With nearly 100,000 employees — including architects, engineers, designers, planners, scientists and management and construction services professionals — serving clients in over 150 countries around the world, AECOM is ranked as the #1 engineering design firm by revenue in Engineering News-Record magazine’s annual industry rankings, and has been recognised by Fortune magazine as a World’s Most Admired Company. The firm is a leader in all of the key markets that it serves, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, oil and gas, water, high-rise buildings and government. AECOM provides a blend of global reach, local knowledge, innovation and technical excellence in delivering customised and creative solutions that meet the needs of clients’ projects.

AECOM’s Policy and Appraisal practice area is a specialist interdisciplinary policy research, assessment, and evaluation team based in our London Aldgate, Basingstoke, Birmingham, Bristol and Plymouth offices. The team comprises 24 staff specialising in natural capital and ecosystem services; social impact measurement and valuation; climate change policy and finance; strategic environmental assessment (SEA)/sustainability appraisal; and local and neighbourhood planning. We are a leading provider of environmental economics expertise with a significant portfolio of natural capital and ecosystem services projects across a range of sectors. We work with national and local government, communities and businesses to help them to identify, account for and ultimately protect or enhance the value of natural capital that they own, manage, impact or depend upon. We anticipate a growing demand for our environmental economics expertise in light of drivers including the Government’s recently published 25-Year Plan for the Environment.

AECOM’s Policy and Appraisal practice area is currently looking to recruit an Associate Director - Environmental Economics. The Policy and Appraisal practice sits within a wider Environment and Planning (E&P) team which constitutes one of the largest environment and planning consultancies in the UK. E&P provides strategic planning, environmental and social consultancy advice for a wide spectrum of policies, plans, programmes, strategies and infrastructure and development projects. Project sectors range from water, power, transport, forestry and waste management, to urban regeneration, industrial facilities, onshore and offshore oil and gas, marine and coastal projects.

The successful candidate will report to a Technical Director and will be expected to work on a range of projects; handling and being accountable for a number of tasks simultaneously. The role will require technical knowledge of environmental valuation techniques, project appraisal (e.g. cost-benefit analysis) and market-based instruments, excellent team working and communication skills, client liaison, the capacity to write clear, accessible reports and the ability to deliver to deadlines. The successful candidate will ideally have consultancy experience but this is by no means essential. The position will be based at AECOM’s London Aldgate office and may require occasional travel to other AECOM and client offices in the UK and overseas.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following illustrative roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of natural capital and ecosystem services assessments, modelling and related policy research projects to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard

  • Understand and implement project management principles and fully appreciate the need to work within project budgets

  • Prioritise project actions and meet commitments on an on-going basis while taking ownership and responsibility for the completion and quality of work

  • Analyse both qualitative and quantitative data effectively and carry out desk based studies and site visits as required

  • Keep up-to-date with relevant policy and guidance relating to natural capital, ecosystem services and environmental valuation

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary and wider team to ensure the smooth running of projects

  • Communicate effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the Policy and Appraisal practice area via telephone, e-mail, letters, reports and presentations

  • Participate in team and client meetings as required

  • Support business development through preparing Expressions of Interest and tender submissions and working to continuously improve our service offer to clients

  • Actively support marketing activities related to natural capital and environmental economics services and proactively promote best practice and innovation across our business.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will require the following specific skills

  • Experience in conducting economic appraisal, cost-benefit analysis and, ideally, developing environmental markets

  • Experience in the practical application of environmental valuation techniques

  • Confidence in using quantitative techniques (experience in econometric and statistical techniques would be beneficial)

  • An understanding of policy in various environmental disciplines would be advantageous

  • A significant level of relevant post-graduate experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have obtained a bachelor’s degree and hold at least a master’s level qualification in environmental, ecological or natural resource economics or have equivalent work experience.
