The Water & Environment Practice offers a comprehensive range of services including:

* Regulatory support for industry
* Ecology
* Flood management
* Hydroecology
* Catchment management and ecosystems
* Corporate water risk and security
* Surveys, modelling and assessments
* Water resource management

At present, our work is primarily UK focussed, but In the future, it is our intention to undertake more international work. In addition, we are beginning to look at technology solutions for the water sector, and this is a skillset we intend to add, working with other parts of the Ricardo Group.


The key responsibility is for the ongoing P&L performance of the Practice against agreed targets for revenue and profit. In order to achieve this, the Practice Director will need to provide effective leadership, and enhance the management capability within the Practice to maximise development and performance. As part of this it will be crucial to create a high performance and innovative culture to drive maximum profit growth.

The Practice Director will be responsible for the overall orders target for the Practice, and will have a significant focus on business development.

Key Accountabilities

* Defines and leads strategic plans to drive top line growth and enhanced profitability;
* P&L responsibility;
* Responsibility for Practice Orders targets;
* Provides strategic input as part of the Senior Leadership Team in the development of the wider business;
* Identifies and develops market opportunities through high-level client engagement;
* Ensures that the leadership in the Practice creates a positive and dynamic environment which stimulates creative, flexible and performance driven teams and attracts high quality talent;
* Works closely with Human Resources team to ensure that future resource needs are identified, developed, and acquired, and that individual performance is appropriately managed;
* Mentors and coaches managers in the Practice to enhance development of key talent;
* Leads on and actively promotes health, safety and wellbeing of the Practice;
* Drives cross practice initiatives to develop offers, products, services to satisfy changing client demands;
* Leads the largest and most technically complex and business critical bids;
* Exploits market contacts and market knowledge to create and develop new business opportunities across all areas of Ricardo Energy & Environment.

Key competencies and experience

* Significant experience relevant to consultancy in the water / environment sectors
* International experience relevant to water & environment:
* Knowledge of relevant issues in the wider environmental market, particularly with regard to the environmental impact of infrastructure / development / construction, including technology solutions;
* Experience of driving innovation within a business environment, including behaviours
* A proven transformational leader of technically skilled professional teams;
* Established as an influential leader in their technical/professional field and respected by external clients in that market sector and has access to a wide network of customers at the most senior levels in business and government at the highest levels, nationally and internationally;
* Highly competent in understanding the market sectors within specific field(s) in order to optimise commercial focus and lead business growth and development;
* Able to take full responsibility for larger or more complex projects or programmes;
* Able to develop high level strategic business plans;
* Ability to manage budgets;
* Achievement in developing innovative and performance focused teams.
* First degree level; may also hold a post-graduate qualification or a comparable professional qualification;
* Significant relevant experience in consultancy or similar comparable or related working environment;

* Excellent consultancy/business skills e.g. negotiation, presentation skills, relationship management;
* Ability to influence senior clients and develop new business;
* Enthusiastic and self-motivated to thrive in this busy and demanding environment;
* Innovative thinking skills;
* Effective and highly developed communication skills, both written and oral, including excellent report and bid-writing skills and ability to give presentations and lead debate at all levels
* Excellent report writing and bid-writing skills;

* Fully conversant with commonly used software, e.g. Microsoft Office, email, internet;
* Excellent organisational skills
