Are you interested in the management and conservation of the Historic York Bar Walls?


Can you manage, review and develop the maintenance strategy and policy to a high quality?


Are you experienced in commissioning, designs and developing innovative solutions for structures and conservation works?


This is a major role which requires an experienced candidate with a good understanding of conservation techniques to retain the significant historic fabric of The Bar Walls. A temporary assignment for 6 months plus paid at between £17 - 20 per hour.


Core responsibilities will include:


  • To maintain the implementation of a regular structural assessment, implementing strengthening and maintenance strategies
  • To develop and prepare detailed designs, specifications and other contract documentation and project manage all maintenance teams
  • Act as an interface between the public, parish councillors, council members and neighbouring authorities
  • Manage and report on expenditure and income to achieve outturns within budget allocations
  • Provide and manage technical approvals to structures
  • Resolve any problems that arise during or after the implementation of projects


Experience required for the role:


  • Experience of managing a small team of professional and technical officers
  • The ability to demonstrate a political awareness  with regards to conservation matters
  • Experience in commissioning, designs with conservation principles, specifying and contract supervision of projects and developing and implementing innovative solutions
  • A good understanding of conservation approaches and techniques
  • The ability to manage resources, carry out works within budget and deliver expected outcomes
  • Experience in computer applications such as Auto CAD and Microsoft packages.


In addition to the above mentioned skills and experience, the ideal candidate will have experience of target setting to prioritise and manage a demanding workload. The successful candidate will need a clear commitment to the development and delivery of the project with excellent negotiation skills.
