Job description:

We are recruiting for an experienced environmental modeller at Consultant or Senior Consultant grade (depending on experience). The successful candidate will help deliver projects with a quantitative modelling component, typically including design and development of new Excel models, adaptation of existing models and numerical modelling outputs for a range of environmental research and consultancy projects. The projects may relate to air quality issues, waste and resource management, environmental policy, energy and sustainable business. The nature of these models is likely to be varied, but may include: modelling of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the implementation of different interventions; modelling of the benefits of improved air quality; use of life-cycle assessment models; models with a financial component (for example, related to investor due diligence); modelling of material and / or waste flows.

It is not essential to have a deep understanding of all of these: our in-house training will enable the successful applicants to develop their knowledge and understanding of these areas.

Duties may include:

  • Design and build of new Excel models;
  • Adaptation of existing Excel models;
  • Data organisation, and manipulation;
  • Statistical analysis;
  • Quality assurance tasks relating to Excel models developed by colleagues;
  • Critical review of models developed by clients or third parties; and
  • Development of environmental modelling methodologies for project proposals.  

The successful applicant may, in time, be required to mentor and train more junior colleagues in environmental modelling.

We are seeking experienced, highly motivated and high calibre individuals to fulfil one or more posts that fit the description. The successful applicant will share our values, and our commitment to quality.

Above all we are seeking a creative, and critical, thinker who is versatile and adaptable, and who is also a confident communicator. It is essential that candidates are numerate, have good written and verbal communication skills, and are able to pass on their knowledge and expertise and support the development of colleagues. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate advanced Excel skills; candidates who are less experienced in Excel may be considered if they can demonstrate high levels of numeracy, relevant experience from other fields such as software design and programming, and a clear aptitude for understanding how models should be structured.

Candidates are expected to be self-disciplined and well organised. They should be able to present themselves in a professional manner. A personal interest in, and commitment to, environmental and sustainability issues is expected.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate the following:

  • Educated to at least degree level (a post-graduate qualification would be desirable) in a relevant discipline; in exceptional experiences, candidates with no relevant academic qualifications, but with obvious experience of direct relevance to the job description, will be considered, but such applicants would need to demonstrate strong candidacy in other respects (see below);
  • Experience with structuring, and building, models;
  • Excellent data research, collection and analysis skills, including the ability to work with, and manipulate, large datasets;
  • Excellent all-round IT skills, ideally including advanced Excel skills. Software design and programming experience is also of interest;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, preferably including experience in writing reports related to models, and associated outputs;
  • Ability to work in a calm, logical way to achieve tasks within set deadlines;
  • A methodical and rigorous approach with a high level of attention to detail;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with multiple colleagues, peers, and external clients; and
  • Ability to think creatively and independently and to take initiative to solve problems.

Applicants for the Senior Consultant role will be able to demonstrate they have the necessary skills for the job with reference to previous experience in a similar role to that described above, preferably in an environmental consultancy, or government department. To be considered for this role you would be expected to have knowledge related to one or more of the environmental issues with which Eunomia is actively engaged, together with at least five years’ relevant experience.

Applicants for the Consultant role might have less experience in a similar role, and /or less experience specifically with environmental issues. You could have no directly relevant employment experience, but have been involved in a relevant PhD, for example. Equally, you may have fewer years’ employment experience than required for the senior role, but with credentials matching those of the desired applicant set out above.

Remuneration

£26,702 to £32,042 for consultant level applicants, depending on qualifications and experience.

£32,042 to £48,064 for senior consultant applicants, depending on qualifications and experience.

Both levels of applicant benefit from:

Death in Service scheme and Private Healthcare from commencement.

Group Pension and Income Protection Scheme after completion of probationary period.

Holiday Entitlement

24 days per year (plus Bank Holidays) rising by 1 day for each full year of service to a maximum of 30 days per year.
