A unique opportunity has arisen to join HS2 as a Water Framework Directive Lead. Using your previous experience working on large scale construction projects, you will be responsible for driving the development of the technical quality, specifications, standards and assurance for the Water Framework Directive compliance associated with the HS2 programme.

Role & Company:

Working within the Environment and Town Planning Team, you will be responsible for developing environmental policy and providing environmental leadership, providing critical challenge and guidance at each stage of HS2’s evolution and across the HS2 organisation. It delivers the environmental defence and promotion of HS2 through the legislative process and legal challenge. You will play a key role liaising with stakeholders including the environment agency and natural England on compliance with the WFD and aquatic ecology matters throughout the life of the project.

High Speed 2 (HS2) will be the UK’s new high speed rail network. As well as improving capacity, the new scheme will shorten journey times between a number of Britain’s major population centres, boost the economy and create thousands of jobs.

Qualifications & Experience:

* BSc in a relevant subject (e.g. aquatic science or other science discipline).
* CIEWEM or IEMA chartership
* Knowledge and understanding of the relevant legislation, technical guidance, industry standards and best practice in relation to Water Framework Directive matters
* Knowledge of surrounding and interacting disciplines, such as surface water/ flood risk, groundwater, drainage, contaminated land, ecology, biodiversity and habitat issues
* Experience of technically reviewing complex catchment scale WFD assessments (ideally with experience in exemptions to the WFD objectives) relating to surface water, groundwater, contamination, transport and civil engineering challenges
* Experience of working on a variety of programmes and particularly large scale construction projects at optioneering, EIA, design and construction stages
* Previous experience of developing pragmatic analysis and cost effective mitigation strategies
* Ability to analyse and interpret geospatial data covering hydromorphology, aquatic ecology and surface and ground water quality.
