AECOM is seeking a talented and ambitious freshwater / terrestrial ecologist to join our growing project coordination team based in the heart of Birmingham’s vibrant city centre. You will be given the platform to showcase both your aquatic and terrestrial experience whilst working with a dynamic and forward thinking team.

Ideally you will have a mixture of terrestrial and freshwater aquatic ecology experience; in particular you will have significant experience and interest in riparian mammals. A good understanding of all disciplines of freshwater ecology (fish, algae, habitats, macroinvertebrates and macrophytes) would be of benefit. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and organized, with well-developed project management skills and good report-writing skills. The ability to process data and create and manage large datasets would be an advantage, as would experience of using GIS to manage sites and fieldwork.

The Central England Ecology Team (Birmingham, Nottingham and Chesterfield) is unique in that whilst we enjoy the benefits and security of a large corporation, we work as a small close-knit ecology consultancy and truly understand the importance of welfare and wellbeing. We have mentors who provide support at a personal level and guide the development of skills and experience. There is a programme of internal training courses and generous individual budgets where we can’t provide specialist training in-house. We promote a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible working hours to suit your commitments, as well as free weekly Pilates classes and an organic DIY fresh juice bar at our Grade II listed ecology office in Birmingham; we also have fun social team activities throughout the year.

Our UK Ecology Team comprises over 100 ecologists based across the UK and covers all terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. We provide our clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity.

With AECOM, you can go as far as your ability and desire will take you. It’s about your interests and passions. It’s about the experiences you bring with you, and, it’s about your personal goals and aspirations. We provide you with the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse workforce of highly talented professionals on both regional and national projects that impact our world for the better - and to gain relevant experience which will be of significant benefit to you in your future career.

Role Responsibilities may include:

  • Organising and carrying out desk- and field-based habitat and species surveys;

  • Co-ordination of field and office-based work;

  • Managing and mentoring of junior staff;

  • Development of monitoring strategies;

  • Provide specialist input to multi-disciplinary teams;

  • Writing and reviewing ecological assessments, reports and other deliverables;

  • Managing the technical and financial performance of ecological projects; and

  • Liaising with clients, project managers and other project stakeholders including statutory bodies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Four (or more) years’ experience of working in a ecology-related (aquatic and / or terrestrial) job role in the public and / or private sector;

  • Experience of designing, co-ordinating and leading field surveys, particularly for riparian mammals;

  • Have demonstrable experience in producing a range of reports and providing ecological advice to clients / stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have a BSc in a relevant subject;

  • A higher degree (MSc / PhD) would be an advantage;

  • You will show evidence of ongoing vocational training;

  • You will be eligible for or have full membership of CIEEM or another relevant professional body.
