Our Ground Engineering (GE) team in Basingstoke is seeking an Associate Director - Engineering Geologist experienced leading and providing specialist input to a range of civil engineering projects such as highways, railways, residential and commercial developments, harbours, coastal stability, infrastructure and flood defences.

To be successful the candidate will have a minimum of fifteen years relevant experience, be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the industry with a proven track record in the delivery of technical projects and be fully conversant with the standards that apply throughout the industry. We are looking for an ambitious team player with leadership qualities, good technical skills, knowledge and experience who is keen to take responsibility for team leadership, mentoring of junior staff and control of project budget and programmes. The position will suite a person who wishes to assist in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.


  • AECOM GE has has an impressive recent portfolio of major national and international infrastructure projects including:

  • Detailed earthworks design and ground modelling for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Earthworks and Preliminary Works Contract.

  • Multi-million pound regeneration of Brent Cross, including highway, local waterway and bridge design.

  • Design of the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel

  • Detailed design of the Phase IV coastal stabilisation works at Lyme Regis.

  • Design reviews/feasibility studies for new LNG port facilities in Ghana and Brazil.

  • Desk studies and ground investigation for Heathrow Terminal 2 Baggage Handling Facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • The appropriate level of technical expertise and experience is required in order for you to take responsibility for the following types of task:

  • Preparation of expressions of interest and priced technical proposals including attendance at internal tender meetings and external interviews with clients.

  • Planning, resourcing, managing and delivering desk-studies, walkovers and mapping, feasibility studies, investigations, reports and designs as stand alone geotechnical projects or working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Reporting to the GE team leader in Basingstoke you will interface directly with engineering geologist and geotechnical engineers within the team from graduates to directors and with other internal design teams across AECOM’s wide compass of disciplines.

  • Act as line manager to a number of staff and control the day to day activities on a number of projects or parts of projects. You will guide and instruct junior staff and take an active interest in their career development in accordance with the AECOM Training Guide for Engineering Geologists which is accredited by the Geological Society.

  • Assist in marketing AECOM GE’s capability by forging good internal and external relationships and contributing to marketing materials.

  • Understand and implement the AECOM Project Management procedures including monthly progress and budget reviews of projects. There may be an opportunity to become an AECOM Certified Project Manager.

  • Carry out regular technical reviews in accordance with the company Quality Management System and act as a Lead Verifier.

  • As an Associate Engineering Geologist you will be responsible for the work carried out by your team, including:

  • Deskstudies and walkover surveys.

  • Ground investigation - scoping, specifying, supervising, logging, interpretation of GI data, derivation of design parameters and production of Ground Investigation Reports to EC-7.

  • Geotechnical design of slopes and earthworks design as well as shallow and piled foundations and retaining walls using a range of software. Where appropriate you will contribute to or oversee production of Geotechnical Design Reports to EC-7.

Minimum Requirements

  • As anAssociate Engineering Geologist you will have relevant experience which has provided you with a wide range of engineering geological/geotechnical knowledge and skills.

  • You will have a working knowledge of UK geology, engineering geology and ground investigation practice.

  • You will be able to describe soils and rocks, appreciate geomorphological features, record your findings and write clear and concise reports.

  • You will be familiar with software such as SlopeW, gINT/Holebase and the Rocscience suite and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of CAD and geotechnical software such as the Oasys suite and Geo5 and WALLAP would be an advantage.

  • You will be familiar with the UK Specification for Ground Investigation, the ICE Conditions of Contract and standards including BS5930 and BS1377 and be able to prepare specifications and contract documents.

  • You should be willing to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods.
