AECOM’s Policy and Appraisal practice area is currently looking to recruit an Associate Director, Accessibility and Diversity. The Policy and Appraisal practice sits within a wider Environment and Planning (E&P) team which constitutes one of the largest environment and planning consultancies in the UK. E&P provides strategic planning, environmental and social consultancy advice for a wide spectrum of policies, plans, programmes, strategies and infrastructure and development projects. Project sectors range from water, power, transport, forestry and waste management, to urban regeneration, industrial facilities, onshore and offshore oil and gas, marine and coastal projects.

The successful candidate will report to an Associate Director and will be expected to work on a range of projects; handling and being accountable for a number of tasks simultaneously. The role will require technical knowledge of accessibility and diversity issues with a user-based focus together with strong project management skills, business development capabilities, excellent team working and communication skills, the capacity to write clear, accessible reports and the ability to deliver to deadlines and to budgets. The successful candidate will have consultancy experience. The position will be based at AECOM’s St Albans office although we are open to the successful candidate also being bases in the London Aldgate, London Wimbledon, Birmingham or Bristol offices.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following illustrative roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of accessibility and diversity related projects and ensure project outputs are delivered on time and to the highest standard

  • Understand and implement project management principles and fully appreciate the need to work within project budgets

  • Prioritise project actions and meet commitments on an on-going basis while taking ownership and responsibility for the completion and quality of work

  • Analyse both qualitative and quantitative data effectively and carry out desk based studies and site visits as required

  • Keep up-to-date with relevant policy and guidance relating to accessibility and diversity

  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary and wider team to ensure the smooth running of projects

  • Communicate effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the Policy and Appraisal practice area via telephone, e-mail, letters, reports and presentations

  • Participate in team and client meetings as required

  • Support business development through preparing Expressions of Interest and tender submissions and working to continuously improve our service offer to clients

  • Actively support marketing activities related to accessibility and diversity issues and proactively promote best practice and innovation across our business

Specific Skills Required:

  • Experience in preparing Design and Access Statements (including Disability Access Statements), developing inclusive design strategies and conducting Accessibility Audits

  • Experience in undertaking Equality and Diversity Impact Assessments and knowledge of current best practice guidance

  • Knowledge of other forms of impact assessment (e.g. environmental, social and health) would be beneficial

  • Confidence in deploying user-focused techniques

Additional Comments:

  • National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC) accreditation.


Minimum Requirements

A significant level of post-graduate relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s level qualification in a related discipline or equivalent work experience
