The role offers excellent career progression opportunities within AECOM and you will have the opportunity to influence how the team continues to grow and develop. Technically you will have a good understanding of all disciplines of freshwater ecology to potentially include algae, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and fish in freshwater and transitional habitats.

The successful candidate would contribute to opportunities in aquatic ecology being developed by AECOM for a range of clients by:

  • Contributing, in a critical role, their expertise in aquatic ecology.

  • Supporting the Scottish Ecology Team, and the wider UK Aquatic Ecology Team, with project work and business development.

  • Providing a technical lead for aquatic ecology in Scotland, including in relation to fish, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and aquatic habitat assessments.

  • Mentoring more junior staff, supporting their written, analytical and field skills and developing their identification techniques in all freshwater disciplines.

  • Authoring and reviewing input to reports, devising monitoring strategies and working within multi-disciplinary teams to provide specialist input.

  • Developing data analysis and processing.

  • Leading in the production of Environmental or Ecological Impact Assessment documents in line with Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) guidelines.

  • Developing project management skills by way of AECOM in-house training schemes.

  • Undertaking other tasks to support the wider environmental business, as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • 2:1 or better degree in aquatic ecology or related subject with an ecological component.

  • Experience working in an aquatic ecology role.

  • Demonstrable experience of contributing to the production of Ecological Impact Assessments and/or Appropriate Assessments.

  • Demonstrable experience of contributing to (and leading, where appropriate) Water Framework Directive (Ecology/Biology) assessments.

  • An understanding of the industry-standard monitoring techniques and analyses for fish, and experience in fish survey requirements and methodology including electric fishing and/or seine netting.

  • An understanding of the industry standard monitoring techniques and analyses for macroinvertebrates (RICT, BMWP, ASPT, WHPT) and macrophytes (MTR, CSM, Leafpacs).

  • Knowledge of legislation relating to the aquatic environment and its implementation, particularly the Water Framework Directive.

  • Good personal time management, communication skills with internal and external clients and team members locally and nationally.

  • Willingness to learn new skills and to be flexible in terms of travelling and working hours as AECOM projects can be distributed across Scotland and Ireland and the wider UK.

  • A full UK driving licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A postgraduate qualification in relevant ecological subject.

  • Previous experience working in the commercial or regulatory sector.

  • SFCC Team Leader electrofishing qualification.

  • RYA Level 2 powerboat qualification.

  • Licensed to tow trailer.

  • Home Office personal or project licence to tag fish.

  • Experience in completing River Corridor / River Habitat Survey.

  • A protected species licence.

  • Proven experience of Phase 1 habitat and/or other ecological survey.

  • Competent user of Esri ArcGIS software.

  • Full membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIEEM).

  • Able to provide evidence of published work in the field of aquatic ecology.

  • Holder of a CSCS card.
