AECOM's Ecology team is currently looking to expand and we are looking to recruit an experienced Aquatic Ecologist to work out of our office and laboratory in Leeds. This is a permanent role starting as soon as possible.

The individual we are looking for will be ambitious team player with a strong aptitude for client care, project delivery and development of innovative, cost effective solutions in a working environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.

Job Details:

  • Successful applicants will be competent macroinvertebrate taxonomist to Family/Mixed Taxon level,

  • Supporting the delivery of existing and new contracts for the collection and analysis of freshwater macroinvertebrate samples and other aquatic surveys, macrophyte & fish surveys,

  • Opportunities to assist with a wider range of terrestrial ecology surveys for the right candidate;

  • Working as part of the existing network of AECOM ecologists within the UK and Ireland;

  • Communicating effectively with their line manager, project managers, clients, project teams and other members of the ecology team, within projects and with clients by telephone, e-mail, letters and reports;

  • Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs; and

  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Environment & Ground Engineering and Power & Energy groups on multi-disciplinary projects;

  • Assisting with other administrative duties which add value to the management and development of the ecology team.

  • The role holder must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, personal responsibility, decision making and team work.

Minimum Requirements

  • We are looking for someone who is self-reliant, thrives on challenges and is happy to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines. Whilst there may also be opportunity to work from other offices on occasion as the AECOM ecology team operates as a single business at a UK and Ireland scale, the successful role holders will be expected to live locally or be prepared to relocate close to the office in which they are based.

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: aquatic ecology – macroinvertebrate sample collection and analysis, preferably to mixed-taxon or species level,

  • Proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety, including first aid training certificate, working near water (Water Safety Training would be advantageous);

  • Professional, organised and thorough approach to work which demonstrates an attention to detail;

  • Strong and versatile problem solving and inter-personal skills, including motivating others;

  • Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients, as well as to manage own time;

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in particular, the ability to write concise technical reports;

  • Electronic data capture, analysis and presentation, including large-scale data processing;

  • Experience of GIS, survey programming / scheduling / resourcing would be advantageous;

  • Willing to travel to offices and sites within the UK and potentially internationally when required by work demand;

  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands (as all roles are likely to involve occasional longer/and or unsociable hours and a degree of working away from home for days/ weeks at a time);

  • A track record in, or aspirations for, continuing professional development and supporting the development / management of junior ecologists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recognised degree in a biological, science or related discipline – a relevant post graduate qualification in the one of these would be advantageous;

  • Member of CIEEM or similar professional body; or eligible to qualify for this status;

  • Water Safety Training;

  • First Aid qualification;

  • Licensed to drive a vehicle in the UK.
