The Energy Practice comprises a group of highly experienced professionals specialising in techno-economic and management consultancy services for the energy sector, with particular emphasis on the power sector, including least-cost investment planning, renewable energy, regulation and smart networks. Projects are split almost equally between the UK and overseas – the practice has undertaken assignments in nearly 100 countries. We have a broad range of clients, including multi-lateral lending agencies, governments, regulators, electricity companies, natural resources companies and private. In the UK the practice is involved in pioneering assignments working closely with distribution companies, universities and leading companies in the application of smart technology to improve the utilisation of electrical distribution systems. Our strength lies in our ability to combine strategic, financial/economic and technical advice as an integrated consultancy service to public and private sector clients.

Purpose:

We wish to grow and develop the skills and expertise of the International team in the Energy Practice within Ricardo Energy & Environment, in line with our plans for the development of the practice. Therefore, we are seeking an Analyst with the ability and potential to support our range of international projects.

Key responsibilities include supporting power sector analysis work, including demand forecasting, cost of service studies, generation/transmission/distribution master plans, tariff setting studies, and power sector restructuring/regulation projects. Specific duties include:

Preparing Excel spreadsheet models to analyse data and identify trends;

Carrying out research into the power sector in diverse international locations, and preparing summary reports on findings;

Preparing PowerPoint presentations for delivery to international clients, highlighting the findings of research and distilling the content of technical reports;

Supporting the international project team in the UK and on overseas missions with project; and planning, delivery and administration tasks.

Key competencies and experience:

A Bachelors or Master’s degree within a discipline related to energy (e.g. power/electrical engineering, energy economics), or equivalent qualification;

Interest in and/or knowledge of energy challenges in developing countries;

Interest in and/or knowledge of renewable energy technologies;

Excellent computer skills including proficient use of Microsoft Excel;

Fluency writing and speaking in English;

Strong analytical skills;

The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;

Willingness to contribute to short-term field trips in developing countries;

French or Portuguese speaking proficiency is an asset;

Relevant professional experience is an asset but non-essential;

Experience with VBA is an asset but non-essential; and

Experience with GIS tools is an asset but non-essential.

A willingness to undertake overseas assignments of typically up to 2-3 weeks’ duration is desirable.
