AECOM is seeking a Senior or Principal Data Manager to support the busy Central England ecology team in the delivery of major infrastructure projects. We are very focussed on data quality and continual improvement and hence we are looking for an individual to implement process and technological change, initially within specific projects and later across the whole regional business. In brief, we are looking to review, and refine our data management processes using new database technologies.

The role will be based in Birmingham, with the opportunity longer-term to work across the UK and Ireland on high profile, challenging and innovative projects. The Birmingham ecology office (one of three AECOM offices in Birmingham) is a dynamic lively environment with a large team comprising graduate environmentalists and ecologists, senior ecologists, land access coordinators and project managers.

The ideal candidate will have experience of handling large complex datasets using databases such as Access, SQL Server or Azure as well as Excel spreadsheets, gained within an engineering consultancy or through academic experience. Ideally, they may have knowledge of the systems and processes used by HS2 Ltd to manage ecological data. They will have developed expertise in implementation of new systems and will have an appreciation for quality management and improvement. It would be of great benefit if they have experience of project and data management on large infrastructure projects.

The ideal person will be highly motivated, pro-active, focused and organized, with an eye for detail and good communication skills. They may also, ideally, have a keen interest in wildlife and conservation and be keen to understand the ecological work being managed. This will create added value through a deeper understanding of the wider Ecology business.

  • Elicit requirements from end users, their managers, client representatives and developers of interfacing systems.

  • Design database schema, queries, forms and reports, including interfaces with external databases, web-based systems and spreadsheet-based processes.

  • Test and manage incremental rollout of new functionality.

  • Train users and create concise, helpful documentation.

  • Build in data protection to address GDPR and personal information protection requirements.

  • Report to managers on progress and plan monthly releases of software.

  • Attend team meetings.

Specific Skills Required :

  • Good IT skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, databases)

  • Self-starter, pro-active and motivated

  • Detail oriented and results-driven. Committed to delivering complex tasks on time and on budget. Experienced in pre-empting potential programme risks, identifying relevant mitigation measures and implementing these in a timely manner;

  • Ability to remain focussed and productive through sustained periods of high pressure and workload;

  • Good communication and facilitation skills

Minimum Requirements

  • A background in engineering and experience of working on large infrastructure projects would be preferable. Significant process improvement experience would be advantageous. An interest in British wildlife and the natural environment is optional but would add real value.
