The Company

Established for 60 years, our client is an engineering consultancy with a presence in 125 countries worldwide, employing 3000 professionals and generating a turnover of over 360M Euros.  They deliver client focused solutions which incorporate service lines from architectural, environmental through to engineering and have an established client footprint in a number of sectors including infrastructure which incorporates rail, water and manufacturing through to nuclear.

The UK arm operates with a dynamic team numbering over 100 professional spread across 6 offices.  They specialise in delivering engineering and environmental solutions into the development, infrastructure and nuclear client base. 

Ranked in the top 40 of NCE ‘Best Civil Engineer Companies to Work For’ and also an ‘NCE Company of the Year 2018 Finalist’, they are unique in respect that they are 100% wholly owned by their staff, with share ownership distributed relatively equally throughout their shareholders, nearly 30% of the staff are partners and the average age of acceptance into partnership is in the mid 30’s.  In addition to plans to double the number of staff they employ globally within the next 4 years, our client has delivered a number of key case study projects within the UK and is planning further substantial growth within the UK region, acquiring 10 new staff last year and appointing an additional 4 UK based partners. 

The Rail Division within the group is one of the fastest growing divisions, with a track record of delivering on prestigious projects including; Riyadh Metro where they were responsible for the main design for metro line 3, incorporating 20 stations, 11km tunnels and 35km of roads and Dublin Metro where they are currently leading a JV on technical design.  The UK Managing Director has recently been appointed Global Rail Director and part of the growth strategy is to create a Rail Centre of Excellence in Birmingham within the UK to compliment similar centres in Warsaw and Madrid.  The group has considerable technical capability within Europe and the creation of the UK based Centre of Excellence will enable growth of a specialist engineering function into this industry which can capitalize on both the UK and global opportunities currently being commissioned.  Additionally, within the UK they are currently well positioned with engagement on CP6 frameworks, which is scheduled to yield further business this year.   

An opportunity has arisen for a Principal Engineer to take a lead position within the UK, to help develop a team head a team which is forecast to grow substantially within the next few years. 

The Role

This is a key position, reporting to the Director of Engineering, as one of the Senior Management Team and working from the Birmingham office.

Primary responsibilities would include;


·        Help establish and build the UK presence in rail

·        Assist in delivering projects within the new frameworks

·        Contribute to the delivery of projects within the Global Rail business


Opportunity to engage on projects would likely be split between the UK and globally, so there would be a requirement for international travel periodically. 


The Individual

The successful applicant would likely have the appropriate qualifications and;


·        Possess a credible track record of working on rail projects

·       Have a track record of civil engineering, particularly welcome would be any exposure of track bed alignment, signalling and communication systems,    however engineering design of stations or associated structures would also be warmly considered.

·        Possess a strong technical ethic, with the ability to conduct commercial conversations with clients

·        Have a positive attitude and interested in delivering into domestic and international projects where required

·        Be within striking distance of Birmingham, or happy to relocate
