AECOM is currently recruiting for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our well established and experienced Ground Engineering team in Basingstoke.

We are looking for an ambitious team player who has a passion for problem solving and who wishes to develop innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding. We require an applicant with a Civil Engineering background, who is willing to work towards Chartership, with experience in geotechnical fieldwork, desk studies, design and factual and interpretative reporting, and ideally with strong capability in geotechnical detailed design of earthworks, deep and shallow foundations and retaining structures.

Office Overview:

Our Ground Engineering team in the UK comprises around 190 staff, providing a comprehensive geotechnical service. The Basingstoke office traditionally has a diverse range of interesting projects in the UK and overseas and over nearly 100 years has built a reputation for successfully delivering ground engineering schemes in the UK and many other countries. We are looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical ability that share our enthusiasm and determination to deliver innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions.

The team provides Ground Engineering input including , desk studies feasibility, ground investigations, detailed design, construction drawings and specifications and construction supervision on a wide range of engineering projects. Our leading UK clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Thames Water, Environment Agency, Heathrow Airport, Rolls-Royce various Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Will be assisting Principal and Senior level staff in various elements of project planning and budget control.

  • Will be working on infrastructure, buildings and power projects in the UK and overseas. These will include schemes such as ports, airports, highways and railways, buildings & structures, coastal defences, power generation, water and waste water schemes.

  • Tasks will include interpretation of ground investigation data, derivation of design parameters, input to Eurocode 7 compliant geotechnical designs for deep and shallow foundations, earthworks and retaining structures (cantilever and embedded), including soil/structure interaction, using commercial software such as the Oasys Suite, WALLAP, Frew, the GeoSlope Suite and Plaxis.

  • Working under supervision of Principal and Senior level staff on the preparation of Geotechnical Design Reports (as well as Ground Investigations Reports and technical notes) in accordance with nationally and internationally recognised standards.

  • Working under Principal and Senior level staff on engineering design, visit sites and write reports, under the supervision of more senior engineers.

  • Assist in the internal checking and review of work by other members of the geotechnical team.

  • Working under Principal and Senior level staff in bidding for jobs and program and budget control and mentoring more junior staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience of working in a geotechnical design office working to EuroCode 7.

  • Working knowledge of ground investigation methods, soil and rock parameter selection, design of shallow footings, piles and retaining walls.

  • Experience of geotechnical software such as that listed above. Experience of finite element analysis using Plaxis or similar is essential.

  • Good communication skills both oral and written are required, some experience of writing technical reports, specifications and contract documents will be an advantage.

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods is essential and previous site and/or overseas experience will be an advantage.

  • Chartered member of ICE.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A civil engineering first degree (BSc, BEng or MEng) is required. A masters or PhD in a geotechnical subject would be an advantage.

  • MICE CEng is required.

  • At least five years of geotechnical design experience.
