We are looking for a Consultant Town Planner to join our growing team of infrastructure town planning consultants in the North of England (offices in Leeds and York). As a Consultant in our team, you will have the opportunity to work on major infrastructure projects from feasibility through to delivery, across a range of sectors. You will assist with the preparation of Development Consent Orders, Transport and Works Act Orders and planning applications, undertake site visits, report writing and work collaboratively across our network of offices with architects, engineers, environmental specialists, economists and other related professionals to develop award winning integrated infrastructure projects.

  • Assisting in the management of planning application submissions for a variety of public sector and commercial clients.

  • Writing Planning Statements and Design and Access Statements for planning applications.

  • Assisting the lead in the management and successful delivery of major infrastructure projects, including procedures under the Planning Act 2008 and the Transport and Works Act 1992.

  • Working as part of collaborative teams on highways and rail infrastructure projects and coordination of multi-disciplinary project teams.

  • Monitoring and managing project budgets and programmes.

  • Liaising with the Environmental Impact Assessment team.

  • Contribution to the preparation of successful commercial tenders.

  • Assisting with project management and implementing quality and health and safety principles.

  • Carrying out planning research and analysis and assist with the identification of planning risk.

  • Participating in internal and external meetings

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant town planning experience.

  • The ability to write clearly and concisely.

  • Able to work on own initiative and under pressure.

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Project.

  • Sound knowledge of UK planning policy and legislation and, preferably a working knowledge of Environmental Impact Assessment legislation.

  • Client focused with good interpersonal skills and collaborative working approach with a high level of commitment to quality.

  • Full current driving licence.


  • The Development Consent Order regime under the Planning Act 2008.

  • The Transport and Works Act 1992 consenting regime.

  • Working in collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams on highways or rail infrastructure projects.

  • Identifying, evaluating and managing planning risk.

  • Managing project budgets and programmes.

Note – this role will suit an experienced graduate town planner who is looking to step up to the next level of responsibility. The role will not suit candidates who have a preference for masterplanning/urban design or architecture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or an equivalent professional town planning organisation.
