About Us

May Walters is a boutique search consultancy specialising in senior positions within the environmental sector.

The Client

An opportunity has arisen with our client, an established consultancy for an individual to join the team.

Our client is a well established multi disciplinary consultancy based across a number of offices throughout the UK.  They are known for provision and delivery of environmental solutions, notably contaminated land, and the full portfolio of EIA chapters, including air, noise and ecology, they have an established client base typically within industrial, development and infrastructure arenas.  Having the security of being owned by a larger company who specialises in manufacture of products into the construction industry, they have the luxury of being able to continue their organic growth in the market.  This growth, catalysed by the restructuring of the management team to put a structure in place that will allow more rapid expansion, has lead to the need to bring in a Head of Ecology.

The Role

Considered to be a key role in the organisation, the highly successful ecology team has developed 6 staff within the organisation, largely without any strategic direction to date, a Head of Ecology is now looking to be appointed.  Growth to date has been due to the high regard of ecology skills within the company and the continuing flow of EIA business from established clients, however there is a desire to attract a more senior individual who can work with the management team to provide strategy and controlled growth to the EIA function generally, with direct responsibility for the ecology team.

Primary responsibilities would include mentoring, developing and organising the existing team, working with clients to develop interesting projects and to facilitate growth in the team.  The individual would work with the management team and have a direct line through to the Managing Director in order to influence the strategy and growth of the environmental side of the business.

The team are spread across the UK, throughout a number of the offices, and this role could be performed from any one of these offices, with a remit to cover the UK.

The Individual

The successful individual could be based anywhere within the UK and have a track record of delivering ecology or broader EIA solutions into the market.

They would be expected to have;

Relevant qualifications and charterships (or be progressing)

Ideally a track record of delivering ecology solutions to projects within the UK.  Technical specialities and licences would be of interest, however the team has a broad portfolio currently.

A track record of delivering EIA solutions into the market would be considered equally as positively, assuming a working knowledge of ecology.

Experience of developing client relationships

A desire to lead and motivate a successful team and to make a step into a national lead role

The team has a very low staff turnover at a senior level and our client is keen to attract the right person to maintain this record.  The culture is very open and honest, with very little hierarchy and there is an emphasis on clients and delivering projects well to maintain sustainable relationships.

They have a flexible approach to work operating a flexitime system to help the team to maintain a good work/life balance.

In return, a top end package will be offered as well as the chance to develop a rewarding career.  Applications are encouraged from individuals who would value being a part of this.
