AECOM Infrastructure & Environment UK Limited
Job Ref:

AECOM’s Environment and Planning Group includes a Water Science Team consisting of water quality scientists, hydromorphologists, hydrologists and hydroecologists. The water environment team specialises in natural water systems and offers a wide range of water science, hydrology and environmental services to private and public sector clients. This includes water and sediment quality surveys and studies, hydromorphological and hydroecological surveys and assessment, river, lake, wetland and terrestrial ecological surveys, ecosystem services assessment, ecosystem rehabilitation, catchment management services, WFD appraisals and impact assessments of new developments.

AECOM’s busy water environment team is seeking to recruit a Water Scientist to assist with a range of survey and assessment projects. The projects undertaken by the team are wide ranging in terms of sector, technical scope and geographical location, including opportunities for working internationally. The majority of our work is in the fluvial environment, although a significant proportion is also focused on estuaries, lakes and the marine environment, and so experience of these environments is beneficial.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary team;

  • Water quality studies (e.g. baseline studies, environmental impact assessment, nutrient loading studies and pollution studies including monitoring and modelling);

  • Hydrological investigations (e.g. flood, drought and water resource allocation);

  • Hydroecological studies (e.g. assessing the effects of schemes on aquatic organisms such as salmonids, freshwater pearl mussels, invertebrates and macrophytes);

  • WFD / Environmental Compliance studies;

  • EIA (e.g. highway, rail, utilities, power generation including renewables, mixed use/commercial/residential and other development types);

  • Pollution prevention advice including preparing Water Management Plans, acting as Environmental Clerk of Works, and developing sustainable treatment trains;

  • Applications for various permissions (e.g. Environmental Permits for flood risk activities and discharges, Water Abstraction / Impoundment Licences, and Land Drainage Consents);

  • Statutory and non-statutory stakeholder engagement and management;

  • Be aware of and understand the AECOM IMS procedures, their importance and their application to projects; and

  • Project management, technical proposal and report writing.

  • Have strong analytical and numerical skills;

  • Have a good level of understanding of aquatic systems and interplay between various disciplines (hydrology, water quality, hydromorphology, hydroecology etc.);

  • Have experience in water and environment sectors such as hydrology (low flows and flood risk), water quality and hydroecology;

  • Be proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite;

  • Experience of undertaking environmental impact and WFD assessments, including in support of EIA projects;

  • Field surveying (e.g. catchment walkovers, fluvial audits, water quality sampling, lake coring etc.);

  • Have experience working with water, utilities, regulators and third sector organisations;

  • Have experience of bid preparation and drafting technical proposals;
