Post : Engineering Technician  (Water Industry)

Reporting to : Asset Manager

The role of the Engineering Technician is to:

- Work with the Asset Management and Water Supply Departments to assist with the operation and maintenance of Water Supply assets.

- Work with and assist Jersey Water teams and contractors carrying out installation, maintenance and repair of plant and equipment.

- To support successful project delivery through the provision of information, researching solutions, and liaison with internal departments and contracted partner organisations.

- To accurately record operational information and to keep business systems up to date with relevant information.

- Ensure that Jersey Water continues to provide the island of Jersey with the highest quality potable water achievable as set in the Company Mission and Strategic Objectives.

Candidate profile

Essential Criteria:

- HNC / HND or BTECH level qualification in a relevant discipline or time served apprenticeship in Engineering.

- An enthusiastic, proactive and self-motivated approach to work to develop best practice and continuous improvement across the business.

- Knowledge of engineering concepts and the requirements of engineering projects.

- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to work across departments externally and internally.

- IT literate and highly proficient in Microsoft Office products.

- A clean driving licence.

Desirable Criteria:

- Ability to use CAD Packages.

- Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings.

- Experience of working with contractors to manage quality and execution of work in a safe and timely manner.

-  Relevant knowledge or experience in any of the following areas: civil / mechanical /electrical / instrumentation engineering.

- Knowledge of water supply systems and relevant principles and standards.

- Ability to organise and prioritise workloads to meet deadlines and to meet deliverable work packages.

- An ability to work under pressure to deliver a critical service and to assist where necessary for emergency and planned works outside of normal working hours.

- A knowledge of relevant legislation and required controls to protect personnel and public safety and to protect the environment during the execution of duties.

Key responsibilities

- To work in conjunction with other departments ensuring a continuous, consistent and resilient service to customers.

- To assist with the installation and commissioning of new and refurbished process plant, machinery and instrumentation, including the operation and update of the company’s Asset Management systems.

- To self-organise and manage time, to deliver successful project and work task outcomes.

- Carry out technical investigations, and prepare business reports where applicable.

- Attend courses and conferences to provide support and training in specialist areas, identifying potential improvements to develop business capability.

- Promote the Company vision and values in all aspects of the role.

- To work in accordance with Health and Safety (Jersey) Law, the Company’s Safety Management Systems and the Code of Practice for Waterworks Hygiene.

- Actively participate in wider business initiatives and cross-departmental projects aimed at supporting strategic business objectives including employee consultation groups, charity and social programmes.

- Carry out other duties as directed

About Jersey Water

Jersey Water is the sole supplier of treated mains water to Jersey, supplying approximately 40,000 homes and businesses. The Company’s two water treatment works supply over 7 billion litres of water to customers through its 580km network of water mains each year. The Company, which is one of the largest landowners in Jersey, employs 92 people.

The Company’s raw water network includes one standby desalination plant, five boreholes and numerous stream abstraction points all feeding six impounding reservoirs.
