Associate Director, International Social Sustainability

AECOM’s International ESIA and Social Sustainability Team is looking to recruit an Associate Director working in international ESIA and ESDD in line with international funders’ environmental and social standards (eg. IFC, EBRD, etc).

Our work helps clients deliver their projects in socially sustainable ways, leading to better outcomes for projects and communities. Our team members gain experience of some of the world’s largest and most challenging projects, working with a diverse range of clients and communities in different countries, and across many sectors including water, oil and gas, power, renewables, infrastructure and mining.

As a senior member of the International ESIA and Social Sustainability Practice Area, you will lead social aspects of ESIA and ESDD on major international projects for our private sector clients and on behalf of international lenders. Working as either a member of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will provide direction and senior review of social workstreams, including: developing and implementing social baseline methods, community and stakeholder engagement, assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation measures, social management plans, preparing and implementing resettlement and livelihood restoration plans, community investment, and assisting clients in meeting international lender standards. You will also be comfortable leading ESIA studies and ESDD, and will ideally have a social specialism, such as labour and working conditions, resettlement, human rights, etc.

As well as leading project delivery, you will have responsibilities to nurture and grow AECOM’s international social sustainability, including: thought and strategic leadership, mentoring the juniors in the team and guiding them in their career progressions; developing existing and establishing new client relationships; work winning.

The international ESIA Practice Area sits within AECOM’s Environment & Planning (E&P) business, which in the UK comprises over 200 people across approximately 20 offices. In London and the Southeast we have offices in Aldgate, Croydon, St Albans, Cambridge and Basingstoke.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will undertake the following illustrative roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead delivery of major SIA and SDD

  • Lead assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation and social management plans.

  • Assist clients in meeting international lender standards and advise on international best practice in social performance.

  • Deliver work through well written reports and presentations to clients.

  • Client account management and engagement with project funders, affected communities and other stakeholders.

  • Lead and contribute to the preparation of project bids.

  • Contribute to business development and working winning activities.

  • Manage international project teams and staff mentoring.

  • Demonstrate leadership in quality and Health & Safety.

  • Assist the team in meeting performance targets.

  • You will be required to travel internationally, occasionally at short notice, but will be UK based.

Minimum Requirements

  • You must have international (non-UK) experience, including experience in coordinating the delivery of ESIA (and preferably also ESDD) projects, excellent knowledge of international finance standards (such as IFC, Equator Principles, EBRD) and be highly motivated and able to work with limited direction.

  • Fluency in languages, particularly French, Spanish and Arabic, would be advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The successful candidate would ideally have a post-graduate qualification related to social development or environmental management. Candidates with a relevant under-graduate degree and a comprehensive level of practical experience will also be considered.
