About May Walters

May Walters is a boutique search consultancy specialising in senior positions within the environment and engineering sector.

We have been retained by a client with a rare opportunity, at an interesting point in their development.  A key individual is sought to perform a senior role within the infrastructure division with an organisation at the beginning in the next phase of their growth.

The Company

Established for 60 years, our client is an engineering consultancy with a presence in 125 countries worldwide, employing more than 3000 professionals.  They deliver client focused solutions which incorporate service lines from architectural, environmental through to engineering and have an established client footprint in a number of sectors including infrastructure, water and manufacturing through to energy and environmental.

In addition to plans to double the number of staff they employ globally within the next 4 years, our client has acquired a number of key case study projects within the UK and is planning substantial growth within the UK region.

An opportunity has arisen for a Principal or Associate Director civil engineer to take a lead engineer position within the UK, to head a new team which is forecast to grow substantially within the next few years.  Currently contributing towards 20% of the UK company revenues, the growth is also forecast to double within the next 2 years, with clients including HS2, Highways England already secured.

The Role

This is a key position, reporting to the Regional Director, and working from the offices in Manchester, a Lead Engineer is required to head up and lead the civil engineering team within the infrastructure sector.

Primary responsibilities would include delivery of civil engineering designs to an established client base typically within infrastructure sector, which is predominantly roads / highways and some rail.

There would also be a requirement to deliver a on a number of projects the civil engineering department, which currently numbers 6 staff, spread across a number of offices, however this number is expected to grow given the workload forecasts for growth within the division.   Technical mentoring, staff development and administration of the design software, together with proofing of the teams final designs prior to submission to clients would be a requirement of the role.

It is envisaged that there would be an immediate responsibility to identify and recruit new members of the team to grow the division and to support the business development with technical input with regard to client tendering.

Projects are largely UK based so some travel within the UK would be required, but there would also be an opportunity to get involved with some interesting international projects in conjunction with the larger group.

In return, there would be a competitive package put together which incorporates flexi-time working from an office which has a pleasant working environment.

The Individual

Likely based within a striking distance to Manchester (albeit exceptional people would be considered in other locations), the successful person would likely have;

•         A track record of civil engineering / drainage design into roads/rail infrastructure sector of at least 10 years

         Worked in the UK for at least 3 years

•         Have a positive ‘can do’ attitude and work well as part of a team

Applications are welcomed from senior individuals but also from individuals with a positive attitude who want to make their mark in the industry.  Our client has a relaxed culture which encourages and supports staff to develop themselves and opportunities.  Applications are encouraged from individuals who would value being a part of this.
