Job Purpose

The Electrical Engineer provides support to project teams in respect of grid connection advice, grid delivery (including the management of grid applications and offers), electrical design management and construction support in the Solar project delivery team (with occasional support for other technologies ), with a focus on adding value to and managing risk for the business.

Effective grid strategy is an important feature of a successful project strategy.

Economic and efficient delivery of grid and electrical balance of plant assets is essential to realisation of important project goals such as profitability and handover.

Key Accountabilities:

The Electrical Engineer has responsibility for grid strategy, grid connection offer management, grid delivery, electrical design management, construction and occasionally asset management support to meet the safety, quality, cost and programme requirements of the project teams.

The primary accountabilities performed by the Electrical Engineer are:
  • Advise project team on early phase grid optioneering and accountable for managing grid connection applications including internal approvals/stage gate paper preparation and presentation. Monitoring/managing and reporting on grid connection payments/liabilities against project progression.
  • Negotiate grid technical requirements and preparation of contract documents to secure necessary grid agreements
  • Grid company relationship management
  • Manage contestable connection delivery (ICP) process
  • Preliminary Electrical Design (e.g. substation / collection system / electrical equipment sizing calculations and specifications / drawings)
  • Manage delivery of specialist electrical engineering
  • Earthing/grounding design
  • Grid code compliance design solutions and specialist studies
  • Co-ordination of design interfaces (e.g. electrical / SCADA / civil)
  • Manage electrical contractor designs
  • Attend equipment FAT’s and site installation/testing of electrical equipment
  • Achieve grid compliance
  • Support the project team in the preparation of subcontract electrical specifications
  • Add value and reduce costs (DEVEX, CAPEX and OPEX) for projects ensuring project viability through efficient working, careful scoping, procurement and innovative engineering and design solutions
Knowledge

  • Knowledge of power systems up to 33kV and above in a power generation environment.
  • Knowledge of grid technical connection requirements and commercial policies.
  • Understanding of wider project risks / requirements and priorities
  • Management of grid applications and grid offers
Skills

  • Ability to suggest alternative (more cost effective) grid connection solutions and to negotiate with external grid companies.
  • Commercial awareness relating to contract compliance, cost control and relative value of engineering solutions.
  • Presentation skills to all kinds of audiences – written and verbal.
  • Attention to detail during preparation and review of design deliverables.
Experience:

  • Experience in the installation, testing, commissioning and operation of power generation systems and other electrical engineering works preferred
  • Experience in working with DNO’s/Grid companies to identify areas where grid capacity is available and manage the related application processes.
Qualification:

Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or related subject.
