About Ulster Wildlife

Over the last forty years, we have been protecting Northern Ireland’s threatened wildlife, like barn owls, red squirrels and skates, saving our precious wild places, and inspiring the next generation to love nature - thanks to our members and supporters, people like you, who make our work for nature possible.

We Save Wildlife

Wildlife is declining at an alarming rate. In the past fifty years, more than 50% of all species across the UK have declined and 15% are at risk of disappearing altogether.

That’s why it’s so important that we look after our wild places and give nature and wildlife a chance of recovery. However, some species need special help to survive, due to the risk of extinction or persecution. We run targeted conservation programmes for species including barn owls, red squirrels, sharks and other wildlife.

We protect wildlife havens on land and at sea

Today we care for 18 nature reserves from ancient woodlands and thriving species-rich grasslands to vast peatlands and inner-city sanctuaries. We also work with farmers and landowners to improve and connect land for wildlife by delivering projects and providing advice.

At sea, we campaign for Marine Protected Areas - parts of the seabed where wildlife is protected.

We bring people closer to nature

We are passionate about getting people outdoors, connecting with the natural world and inspiring them to act on its behalf. We were founded with a strong focus on education and people are still at the heart of our work today.

From outdoor learning programmes and wildlife clubs for kids to training schemes and youth-led environmental projects to wildlife events and hands-on volunteering, we engage thousands of people of all age and backgrounds with nature every year.
