Supporting the sustainability of the GB railway is one of RSSB’s top strategic priorities. This is delivered by RSSB’s Sustainable Development team. The team manages a cross industry sustainable development programme to develop and share best practice more broadly across the industry and is leading the development of the Sustainable Rail Strategy with and for the rail industry. 

The Sustainable Rail Solutions Lead will play a vital role in embedding the industry’s response to the challenges of sustainability.  The role will take responsibility for ensuring technical solutions, tools and responses to sustainability developed by RSSB and others within the Sustainable Rail Programme can be adopted by GB rail.

Working closely with the RSSB lead subject matter experts (Lead SMEs) for air quality, carbon and climate change, and social sustainability, the Sustainable Rail Solutions Lead will act to ensure the implementation of project outcomes crucial to deliver the ambition of the industry’s Sustainable Rail Strategy.


- Ensure a consistent and aligned response to the Sustainable Rail Strategy, providing for the actions set out by the Lead SMEs.

- Establish and maintain a pipeline of sustainability challenges and opportunities from across technical areas and industry sectors that require a solution; drawing from expert colleagues in RSSB and the wider industry to highlight where solutions are needed.

- Reach out to the rail supply chain and sectors outside rail to identify innovative approaches with a view to application in rail.

- Monitor complementary activities being undertaken by other organisations/institutions developing sustainability solutions and where appropriate ensure RSSB (and GB Rail) can take advantage.

- Design and implement an efficient process to evaluate and prioritise problems taking insight from technical leaders in RSSB.

- Work with internal stakeholders to support the scoping, development and delivery of projects or initiatives to deliver the solutions required.

- Pursue consistency across sustainability topics, develop and share best practice more broadly across the industry and ensure wherever possible solutions are considered to address multiple technical aspects.

- Maintain active service of existing tools e.g. Rail Carbon and Rail Environment tool

- Bring a ‘tool-set’ approach to shape potential solutions e.g. a GIS based air quality mapping tool with scope to broaden to include other sustainability topics such as noise.

- Harness the digital capability in RSSB to deliver innovative sustainability solutions.

- Develop relationships and gain consensus with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior industry executives via the Sustainable Rail Groups.

- Provide accessible but technically accurate communications material on sustainability for use by RSSB and the industry as part of engagement and communications campaigns.


- Expertise in sustainable development, including a relevant university degree in environmental science/sustainability or equivalent, or professional status with IEMA (Associate IEMA, or Practitioner IEMA) or equivalent industry experience.

- Recognised expertise in sustainability technical solutions development and implementation or relevant change management projects.

- Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to influence and take into account contribution from multiple stakeholders, internally and externally and to develop consensus among a wide range of stakeholders.

- Experience in developing and delivering multi-stakeholder projects to implement solutions in a commercial setting.

- An analytical and strategic thinker with the ability to get to the heart of the problem, focus on solutions and identify both strategic and tactical routes to implementation.

- In-depth understanding of environmental and social sustainability and how organisations are tackling it through changed processes and technologies.

- Experience of stakeholder engagement at a senior level.

- Knowledge and understanding of transport industry operations, infrastructure management and the GB rail sector (desirable).

- A commitment to RSSB’s values and customer service.
