The challenge

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.

Each of our 14 regions has its own Programmes team, which works in partnership with local authorities and other organisations to balance the risk of floods and coastal erosion with supporting economic growth, the wellbeing of our communities and the environment. By adding local insights to the development and planning of work, you’ll be helping to protect people, property and the environment from the challenges of global climate change. Your skills have never mattered more.

The role

Supporting more senior colleagues, you’ll gain valuable insights into the way large-scale projects are planned and delivered. With responsibility for handling project information such as schedules and budgets, you will also process data, prepare newsletters and briefings, support meetings, accompany project managers on site visits and help our with community events.  There’s lots to learn and, as you grow in confidence, we’ll support your ambitions and ensure you can use your experience as a spring-board for your future.

The person

Well organised, excellent at planning and quick to learn, you’ll be confident about using Microsoft Office. You’re likely to be educated to Level 3 or A-level and will ideally hold a qualification in Prince 2, APM or another recognised project management methodology, but this can form part of your development plan. You’ll also ready to work flexibly as part of a team to ensure everything runs smoothly. Good written and spoken communication skills are essential.

The benefits

Our benefits package includes generous annual leave, an excellent pension and flexible working arrangements. We’ll also look after your wellbeing through our employee assistance programme, shopping and leisure discounts, and interest-free loans for bikes and season ticket loans.

There are many opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

The Environment Agency is committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
