AECOM is seeking to hire an Arboricultural Consultant in the South UK region ideally in the Basingstoke office (however we will consider Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, and Southampton office locations too). The Arboricultural Consultant will deliver consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget. Previous experience should include undertaking tree condition surveys, the production of BS5837 level survey and reporting work, the management of trees on development sites and familiarity with Statutory Designations relating to trees. 

Job Duties 

  • Undertake site surveys to the required scope, e.g., BS 5837: 2012 or Tree Condition Surveys. 
  • Oversee the production of AutoCAD drawings with the necessary level of detail as required for the scope of the project.
  • Prepare arboricultural reports to BS 5837:2012, Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA), Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS), tree condition surveys and risk assessments.
  • Providing guidance to arboricultural issues and communicating technical concepts or principals to both clients and professional colleagues in a clear and simply manner.
  • Supporting internal clients with delivering the arboricultural requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects.
  • Working independently, or with other arboricultural and landscape professionals, in the planning, delivery and management of arboricultural surveys; analysis and evaluation of results, arboricultural impacts assessments, and the design and implementation of tree protection measure, and arboricultural mitigation strategies.
  • Assisting with tender preparations and project costings.
  • Work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Comply with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs. 
Arboricultural services within AECOM are typically provided as part of a wider range of integrated environmental and engineering services to support the planning and development process. AECOM’s services include pre-development appraisals, BS5837: 2012 tree surveys, arboricultural impact assessments, tree condition surveys and risk assessments, arboricultural method statements, tree and woodland planting specifications, tree valuations and urban forest management and tree strategies project management, feasibility studies, detailed design and construction on a wide range of contracts and also supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have an arboricultural interface. 
Our clients are from the private and public sector, and include Highways England, Network Rail, National Grid, Environment Agency, and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers. The team is involved in a varied range of major national and international projects including:
  • Anglesey North Wales Connection between Wylfa Power Station and Pentir, North Wales. 
  • Metrolink Trafford Park Line, Manchester.
  • Transport for London.
  • Highway improvement schemes, such as the M56-M6 Toll Road, A1(M) and A38.
  • Lincoln Western Growth Corridor.
  • White Peak cycleway.
  • A wide range of Heritage Lottery funded Parks for People projects including Headstone Manor and Levengrove Park.  

Minimum Requirements

Specific Skills Required:
  • A sound level of arboricultural knowledge, including BS5837:2012, BS8545:2014 and BS3998:2010. 
  • Competent in tree identification, inspection, condition assessment and necessary management options.
  • Technical and professional proficiency with a demonstrable history of delivering arboricultural assessments and reports to a high standard, on time and within budgets.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK legislation, best practice and policy relating to arboricultural matters.
  • Previous experience should include undertaking tree condition surveys, the production of BS5837 level survey and reporting work, the management of trees on development sites and familiarity with Statutory Designations relating to trees.
  • Professional, organised and thorough approach to work which demonstrates an attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients, as well as to manage own time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in particular, the ability to write concise technical reports.
  • A flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands as the roles is likely to involve occasional overnight stays within the UK.
  • Proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety.
  • IT skills should include Microsoft Office with the use of AutoCAD, GIS and industry graphics packages being an advantage within this role.
  • A full driving licence will be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualifications should include as a minimum the Technicians Certificate in Arboriculture, (or equivalent QCF Level 3/4 qualification).
  • Lantra Professional Tree Inspection qualification
  • Evidence of recent active training and CPD within the arboricultural industry
  • QCF Level 6 arboricultural qualification or equivalent
