Environmental Services Association

ESA is the trade association representing the UK’s waste management and secondary resources industry. ESA Member companies span the full range of waste management and related environmental services. This includes collection, treatment, disposal, re-use, recycling and recovery of waste. They also supply specialist equipment and provide environmental consultancy services.

ESA’s vision is to promote the development of an economically and environmentally sustainable waste and secondary resource management industry for the UK and the EU.  Our purpose is to help all levels of government in the UK, EU and ESA’s Members to achieve this vision.

We  are committing to providing a cost-effective, high quality and relevant service to our Members, to being a valued source of assistance and advice, to enhancing the public perception of the industry and to helping the industry to continue to raise environmental and other standards.

Our industry, which accounts for 0.7% of GDP, has quadrupled England’s domestic recycling rates over the last ten years, with even greater improvement in Scotland. Our industry provides a third of the UK’s renewable energy and is the “most important council service” according to two out of every three voters.

What does ESA do?

On behalf of our Members, ESA:

works with the Government: ESA provides a powerful representative voice within the Government and works closely with UK ministries like DEFRA, devolved administrations like the Scottish Executive, regulators like the Environment Agency and SEPA and EU Institutions

lobbies in Europe, Westminster, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

arranges Member’s events: Conferences throughout the year as well as our Annual Luncheon attended by 500 industry leaders

ESA provides Members’ services such as weekly email bulletin updates on Policy and Parliamentary activity, ESA’s Resource Management and Recovery magazine every fortnight, a Members’ area of ESA's  website and national helpline, and national and regional networking events.
